The basic difference is as follows in layman terms:

Duckworth Lewis in IPL 2023 goes by the logic that the run rate increases gradually from the first over and reaches culmination in the final overs.
VJD method goes by the logic that the run rate will be high in the first few overs because of Powerplay, then dips in the middle overs and reaches culmination in the final overs.

In short: if you go by Duckworth Lewis method, the next over’s run rate will always be higher than the current over’s run rate & if you go by VJD method, the next over’s run rate could be lesser than the current over’s run rate.

KKR team & DL Method Controversy again in IPL 2023

History repeats. In 2018, when Dinesh Karthik captained KKR, they lost to then Kings XI Punjab, as DL method was deployed.

The same thing happened again, during 2023 IPL’s second match (Punjab Kings vs Kolkata Knight Riders), due to DL method.

In the first occurrence: KKR scored 191 runs. Punjab was chasing. They were 96 without a loss for 8.2 overs. Rain interrupted. When they came back, the target was set to 29 off 28 balls. A mess it was!
In the second occurrence: PBKS scored 191 runs. KKR was chasing. They were 146 in 16 overs. Rain interrupted. Sunil Naraine & Shardul Thakur were batting. They hit one six each and they were on fire. But based on DL method in IPL 2023, KKR lost again.

What Dinesh Karthik told stands the same: “I didn’t understand that bit, but still people are trying to find out what DL method is.” He added, “VJD is an Indian method, IPL is an Indian tournament. Why not try it in the future?”
