Types of duck in cricket are eight. When a batter gets out on zero, he is said to be dismissed for a duck. The most crucial factor in differentiating one duck type from the other is the number of deliveries faced before scoring zero.

What Is Duck In Cricket?

A duck in cricket refers to a batsman getting out on zero. Every batsman wants to contribute, and getting out on zero is the worst thing that can happen to a batsman. If a batsman is in bad form, he is most likely to get out on a duck.

Types Of Duck In Cricket – Explained In Detail

Following are the types of duck in cricket:

  1. Golden Duck
  2. Silver Duck
  3. Diamond Duck
  4. Platinum Duck
  5. Laughing Duck
  6. Bronze Duck
  7. Pair Duck
  8. King Pair Duck

Golden Duck – Surya Knows Better

Golden duck is when a batter gets out on the first ball that he/she faces. Imagine walking down to bat, getting to the crease, and returning back after facing just the one ball. More than getting out on zero, a batsman might feel frustrated about the fact that he has to do the walking bit without contributing.

The India vs Australia ODI series in March 2023 saw a dramatic event, as India’s Suryakumar Yadav got out for a Golden Duck in all three matches of the series. Out of the three times, two times he got out to Mitchell Starc, while once was dismissed to left-arm spinner Ashton Agar.

Silver Duck

The Silver duck in cricket is when a batter gets out on the second ball that he/she faces. Any duck is bad, but when you consume more balls without scoring any runs, then it gets worse.

Diamond Duck | Rarest Among The Types Of Duck In Cricket

A Diamond duck is a very rare event in cricket. When a batter gets out without facing a delivery, then it is termed as a diamond duck. For this event to happen, a batter has to get run-out without facing the ball.

Platinum Duck In Cricket

If a batter gets out on the first ball of the innings itself then it is called a platinum duck. The platinum duck is also called a royal duck. An opener facing the first ball of the innings is at the risk of getting out for a platinum duck.

Laughing Duck

When the last wicket of a team falls without contributing, it is called a laughing duck. It is one of the most common types of duck in cricket, as lower-order batsmen are not particularly known for their batting.

Bronze Duck

It is one of the types of duck in cricket and it is in the same line as that of silver duck and golden duck, the difference being a batter getting out on zero on the third ball.

Pair Duck

The pair duck is applicable for test cricket where there are 2 innings. If a batter gets out on zero in both the innings, then it is known as a pair duck. This is one of the most disappointing types of duck for a batter, as he contributes nothing in both the innings.

King Pair Duck

King pair duck is an extension of pair duck. A king pair is when a batter gets out for zero in both the innings of the first ball.
